1. Make sure the scene is safe 2. Check for responsiveness by tapping the victim’s shoulder and shouting “Are you okay?” 3. If the victim is not responding, check pulse and simultaneously check to see if the victim is breathing by looking at the chest. Do this for at least 5 - 10 seconds. If the victim has no pulse and is not breathing or only gasping, activate Emergency Response System (ERS) by sending someone to call 911 and get the AED. Begin CPR immediately and use the AED as soon as it is available. If you are alone with no cellphone, leave the victim to activate the ERS and get the AED before beginning CPR. 4. Start with 30 chest compressions at the depth of at least 2 inches and no more than 2.4 inches on the lower half of the breastbone. The rate should be at least 100 compressions per minute, but not more than 120. 6. Open the airway using the head tilt chin lift and give 2 breaths using a pocket mask or bag valve mask. 8. Continue sets of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until the ambulance arrives to take over, the AED arrives, or the victim starts to respond. Note: If two rescuers are present, one rescuer will assume the role of the compressor and another will be in charge of giving the breaths. For patients who are not intubated the compression ventilation ratio will remain at 30:2 with rescuers switching roles every two minutes. If the victim has an advanced airway, the compressions will be continuous at the rate of 100-120 per minute while the breaths will be given once every 6 seconds or 10 breaths per minute.
CHILD CPR
1. Make sure the scene is safe 2. Check for responsiveness by tapping the child's shoulder while shouting “Are you okay?” 3. If you are alone with no cellphone, follow the steps for adults if collapse is witnessed but if collapse is unwitnessed give 2 minutes of CPR first before leaving the victim to activate the emergency response system and get the AED. leave the victim to activate the ERS and get the AED before beginning CPR. 4. Start with 30 chest compressions at the depth of at least 2 inches or 1/3 the AP diameter of the chest. Use one hand or two hands to compress. Note: If two rescuers are present the compression to ventilation ratio changes to 15:2 and rescuers switch roles after every 2 minutes or 10 sets of 15 compressions and 2 breaths. If child has pulse greater than 60 beats/ mi pulse every 2
